The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office Detention Division supports county detention operations serving the San Angelo region and surrounding areas of West Texas. The Tom Green County Detention Facility has capacity for approximately 450 detainees and houses an average daily population of roughly 350 detainees.
County detention and healthcare operations supported by sworn detention officers, civilian detention staff, and a dedicated on-site medical team led by the Health Services Administrator.

• Increased patient throughput during clinic sessions
• Higher quality of care during encounters
• Real-time reporting for quality assurance and audits
• Improved visibility into staff productivity
• Reduced pharmacy costs for the county
• Lower liability risk tied to documentation and intake workflows
As Health Services Administrator Kristopher Martin explains:
“CorrecTek has allowed us to see more patients in a shorter amount of time with a higher level of care at each encounter.”
Before implementing CorrecTek, Tom Green County struggled with limitations in its existing systems. The facility had transitioned from paper charts to another electronic health record platform, but the system failed to deliver the reporting capabilities needed to manage correctional healthcare operations effectively.
As Martin recalls, the previous system simply “didn’t allow for accurate reporting of pertinent medical data from patients’ charts.” Vendor support also created frustration. In Martin’s words, “the service was atrocious.” Without reliable reporting tools, the healthcare team lacked the visibility needed to evaluate performance, monitor quality of care, and prepare for audits with confidence.
The facility needed a system capable of producing operational data while supporting the unique workflows of correctional healthcare. For Martin, the motivation was clear. The team needed “reporting of important metrics for the purpose of quality improvement, process improvement, auditing, and general functionality.”
At the same time, they hoped to improve medication ordering workflows and vendor responsiveness. Martin explains that the facility was also looking for “better customer service and a record that was able to utilize electronic medication ordering to a local pharmacy.”
During the evaluation process, CorrecTek quickly emerged as a strong candidate. According to Martin, the platform “checked all of our boxes for what we were looking for while maintaining an affordable cost for our organization.” What ultimately impressed the team most, however, was the depth of the system’s capabilities.
CorrecTek provided features that extended beyond the facility’s original requirements. As Martin explains, the system offered “so many additional things that weren’t even on our needs list — since we didn’t know what we needed until we knew what was possible with such a good correctional-specific EHR.” Implementation required coordination across healthcare staff, jail administration, and county IT teams.
Martin notes that “working with county partners is difficult due to bureaucratic delays and inefficiencies.” Despite those challenges, the CorrecTek implementation team helped keep the project on schedule. Training established a strong foundation for system adoption.
“They laid the groundwork,” Martin explains, and afterward “the support picks up where they leave off.” The implementation leadership also stood out. According to Martin, “The implementation team greatly exceeded my expectations.”
Once CorrecTek was fully implemented, the facility began experiencing improvements across several operational areas. Clinical workflows became more efficient while maintaining strong documentation standards. Martin explains that the system “has allowed us to see more patients in a shorter amount of time with a higher level of care at each encounter.”

Operational visibility also improved significantly. The facility can now analyze healthcare operations using reliable data. CorrecTek enabled the team to “begin trending data for quality assurance and improvement.” Administrators also gained the ability to evaluate workforce productivity. The system helps the facility “keep track of our staff productivity.”
Medication workflows became more streamlined as well. According to Martin, CorrecTek “has led to a reduction in pharmacy costs for the county.” Just as importantly, improved documentation strengthened the organization’s risk management posture. The new workflows have “decreased our overall liabilities,” Martin explains, particularly those tied to “poor documentation or failures in sick call or intake processes.”
Another advantage Martin highlights is the system’s flexibility. CorrecTek can be configured to support both simple and advanced operational workflows. The platform “can be very simple and straightforward,” he explains, but it can also support “very complex reporting, orders, and workflows.” That adaptability makes the system useful for facilities of different sizes and operational complexity. “This flexibility,” Martin adds, “makes it ideal for institutions at every size or level.”
For Martin, however, the responsiveness of the CorrecTek team has been one of the most important aspects of the partnership. Support requests are handled quickly and consistently. According to Martin, “the support is outstanding — always pick up within two rings, always friendly and knowledgeable.”
He has also been impressed by the level of leadership involvement when issues arise. When an external medication ordering interface experienced outages, Martin recalls that “everyone was quickly involved up to and including the CTO/CIO pressing on those partners to escalate their fixes.”
Based on his experience, Martin regularly recommends CorrecTek to colleagues in the corrections healthcare field. “I would and I do,” he says in relation to advocating.
For Martin, the reason is straightforward. It is “easy to recommend a product that works as it is intended and is provided by a company that stands by its product and is there when you need them.” He also believes many organizations are still paying significantly more for systems that provide less value.
In his view, “this product is under-utilized in our area and people are paying much larger sums for much less functionality and poor service.” When those organizations see the difference, Martin believes the conclusion will be obvious. “They will agree.”
